New 007 Game Announced at IO Interactive

| | ,

A new James Bond game has been announced to be in development at Danish studio IO Interactive. Project 007 (working title) is currently in active development at IOI’s Copenhagen and Malmö offices. The game will feature a wholly original origin story for the famous spy and will be the most ambitious game in IOI’s history.

The most recent Bond game was 2012’s 007 Legends for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Like most licensed games at the time, the title came out to poor reviews and was considered pretty forgettable.

N64 fans will remember the classic that was Goldeneye. Developed by Rare, the game was a huge hit, mostly for being one of the first major first-person shooters to feature a local multiplayer mode. So there is a legacy that IO Interactive will have to live up to.

Project 007 is also being helmed by a critically acclaimed developer, and it’s also not their first rodeo in the spy genre. IO Interactive is well known for the popular Hitman franchise. The story and tone of the recent games in the series have also tackled the spy thriller genre quite successfully. It’s not the best-written spy story, but it sets the stage pretty well for the gameplay.

The question is, how much of the gameplay will they take from Hitman? After making 3 games in the series since 2016, it seems as though IOI is interested in taking a break from agent 47. Plus, it would be pretty lame to just get a Hitman game with a 007 skin. So it makes sense that the game would be a departure from their usual formula.

However, IOI has already made the perfect spy game. As 47, the player is tasked with information gathering, infiltration and assassination. The classic actions of a spy. And the focus on stealth fits right in with the motif. It would be criminal to not at least use some of the ideas from their previous games.

Looks like we’ll just have to wait and see.

We might not know when to expect Project 007, but Hitman 3 will be out January 20, 2021, for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC.

  1. The recent Hitman games to me have always been a satire of the spy genre, so I’m curious if IOI will take this in a more serious direction consistent with the recent Bond films. Maybe something more linear?
