Best Star Wars Video Games to Play Before Squadrons Launches

| | , , , , ,

While the recent crop of Star Wars films has been incredibly divisive, the franchise has notably expanded into various other mediums such as television and literature. Some of the best Star Wars stories are being told in these mediums, and the franchise also has a storied history of video games, both old and new. With Star Wars films currently on hiatus until 2022, you might be itching for new stories set in a galaxy far, far away. Especially following the recent announcement for Star Wars: Squadrons. Discover some of the best Star Wars video games to play that are both canon and true legends.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

The most recent Star Wars game released by Respawn turned out to be one of the best. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order takes place during the time between the original and the prequel trilogy, otherwise known as the “dark times.” While EA’s handling of the Star Wars license has been controversial, Fallen Order features great lightsaber combat and a compelling, canonized story with new characters that make it one of the best to come from the Disney era.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

No Star Wars video game would be complete without the inclusion of Knights of the Old Republic, not to be confused with the MMO. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is an RPG game that came out in 2003. Since its release, the game has only grown in popularity, in large part due to the era that takes place thousands of years before the films. Knights of the Old Republic is also available on just about every video game platform out there too.

Star Wars: Battlefront II (2005)

Another one of the best Star Wars video games to play recently got the reboot treatment, but we recommend you stick with the original Star Wars: Battlefront II from 2005. While the reboot has had its own redemption story following several updates, nothing beats the gameplay of the original Battlefront II. Plus, an older video game is a bonus because you can save money since you can find it on sale for an affordable price.

Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

Jedi Knight is yet another beloved video game series from the LucasArts days. However, we recommend you play its sequel, Jedi Outcast, for the lightsaber combat is ahead of its time and follows the story of one of the most notorious characters under the Legends banner, Kyle Katarn. The game was also remastered for the Nintendo Switch, retailing at only $10.

Star Wars Galaxies

Before the Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO was launched in 2011, there was Star Wars Galaxies, one of the most ambitious games of all time. The game allows you to create your own Star Wars adventure by designing your own unique character and choosing your own profession. Galaxies continues to have a cult following, with fans keeping the game alive to this day despite its shutdown.
