Parrot Announces New Foldable Drone with 4K HDR Capabilities

| | , ,

Parrot aims to change the way we look at drones with Anafi, its newest portable UAV. Judging by the French manufacturer’s press release, the Anafi is meant to be somewhat of a game-changer for the industry. The drone comes equipped with all the bells and whistles one might expect from a high-end product but it also comes with a very special feature – it can change its size.

Parrot Anafi Specs

The main selling point of the Anafi is that it can be folded to increase portability. This is a huge deal for traveling photographers who want to have their drone nearby at all times but don’t have a lot of carrying space at their disposal. According to Parrot, the drone only weighs in at 11.2 ounces, or around 318 grams. The Anafi’s ultra-compact design allows it to fit pretty much anywhere in your luggage. Or, why not, even in the pocket of your jacket.

Parrot worked for over two years to make the Anafi as light and compact as possible. However, the company clearly didn’t skimp on any of the specs while doing so. In spite of its size, the Anafi has all the capabilities of a large drone. The UAV features a 21MP HDR camera capable of capturing video in 4K resolution. The camera can rotate vertically in a 180-degree arc and offers lossless zoom of up to 2.8x. However, there’s a little caveat to the zoom function. While the camera can maintain 4K resolution up to 1.4x, it can only handle 1080p when zooming all the way up to 2.8x. Still, the video capabilities are certainly nothing to sneeze at.

In terms of battery life, Parrot claims that the Anafi can achieve a flight time of 25 minutes before returning to base. Not the best flight time out there but it is very solid for a drone of this size. The drone is compatible with USB-C cables so it can easily be recharged and sent back on its way again. Speaking of ease-of-use, Parrot worked hard to ensure that the new SkyController 3 and FreeFlight 6 applications are as intuitive as possible. The app’s interface even features automatic control modes for beginners. Meanwhile, seasoned drone pilots can take advantage of the more advanced features to get the most out of their experience.

Price and Release Date

The Parrot Anafi will retail for $699 or your regional equivalent on Amazon and other select retailers. This is about $100 cheaper when compared to the DJI Mavic Air, which is likely to be Anafi’s main competitor once the drone launches. The Mavic Air is also foldable and comes with similar specs so the lower price tag might tilt the scales in Parrot’s favor. The Anafi is expected to hit the shelves in just a few weeks on July 1st.
